Young People's Translocal New Media Uses: A Multiperspective Analysis Of Language Choice And Heteroglossia

2009

The aim of this paper is to shed light on the particularities of the linguistic, social and cultural action of young Finns in translocal new media spaces, and the ways in which they themselves make sense of and account for their actions. We present findings from 4 case studies, each of which illustrates aspects of translocality in young Finns' new media uses. Theoretically and methodologically the case studies draw on sociolinguistics, discourse studies, and ethnography, making use of the concepts of language choice and linguistic and stylistic heteroglossia. Through the 4 cases in focus, the paper shows how young people's linguistically and textually sophisticated new media uses are geared…

An ethnographic study of language socialization and choice in a first and second grade English medium classroom in Finland

2013

In this ethnographic study of language socialization I investigate how a monolingual language norm is instituted, maintained, monitored, resisted, and subverted by participants in a first and second grade English medium class in Finland. In this setting language choice and use are an integral part of membership in this class. This study foregrounds the social implications of managing a monolingual norm by examining student agency, resistance, the achievement of voice, the uptake of a teacher-like discourse, and the practice of repair. The end result is a detailed exploration of peer-talk among students engaged in a variety of activities, highlighting the diverse trajectories of individuals,…

Choosing an A2-language and language education from teachers’ point of view

2015

Language education policy consists of multiple levels, all the way from the European Union to teachers in local schools. Bearing in mind that even teachers have a role to play in language education policy our bachelor’s thesis aimed to create an overall picture of what knowledge do primary school teachers and headmasters in the Jyväskylä area possess relating language education matters and more specifically the A2-language. The study also examined the situations in which the teachers would or would not recommend the A2-language to a pupil. How the teachers act in the process of choosing the A2-language was also the focus of this study. This article affords a glance to our research and its r…

The Socio-Material Value of Language Choices in Mozambique and Finland

2022

AbstractThis chapter explores parental choice of language programs from a socio-material standpoint. It uses a DeleuzoGuattarian framework of smooth and striated spaces to understand how parents in Mozambique and Finland position themselves when making choices concerning their children’s language education. We analyzed interviews from Finland and focus groups and policy documents from Mozambique to understand the materialities and social discourses that constitute parental choice. We found that in Finland, materiality as a physical space (e.g., school location) factored into caregivers’ decision making when selecting schools for their children. In Mozambique, in turn, materiality as socioec…

Students’ choice of language and initial motivation for studying Japanese at the University of Jyväskylä Language Centre

2015

Elective language courses, particularly those starting from the beginner level, constitute their own special group within the communication and language course offerings of universities. The elementary courses of less commonly taught languages (LCTL), such as Japanese, provide students with the opportunity to acquire, among other benefits, a proficiency that distinguishes them from other job applicants. Ordinary language skills, commonly limited to English only, are today regarded as the default and not as any unique international asset. Even partial knowledge of a less commonly taught language and culture broadens one’s worldview and increases cultural understanding. The many years of expe…

Language choice in EFL teaching : student teachers' perceptions

2012

Why English? : Finnish streamers' views on their language choice

2017

Videopelien reaaliaikainen jakaminen on yleistynyt viime vuosina valtavasti ja suoratoistopalvelu Twitch on kerännyt miljoonia pelisessioitaan jakavia kaikkialta maailmasta ja streamaamisesta onkin kehittynyt miljoonabisnes. Tutkielmani perehtyy suomalaisten streamaajien kielivalintoihin, kun he ovat päättäneet käyttää streamiensa kielenä englantia suomen sijasta. Tutkielmani tarkoitus oli selvittää mikä motivoi suomalaiset pelaajat streamaamaan juuri englanniksi ja millaisia näkemyksiä heillä on omaa kielivalintaansa kohtaan ja mikä heidän suhteensa englannin kieleen on. Tutkimukseni koostui kolmen suomalaisen streamaajan haastatteluista. Haastatteluissa pyrin ymmärtämään osallistujien kie…

Teachers’ language practices and choices in a bilingual, co-located kindergarten in Finland

2022

This article explores the language practices and choices of four teachers in a co-located kindergarten in Finland. Following Finland’s official bilingualism, the education system is built on two tracks –Finnish and Swedish. As official languages of Finland, the two languages share the same status, but since Finnish is the registered language of the vast majority of the population, Swedish can be seen as a de facto minority language –one reason why Swedish education has been seen as an important space for maintaining Swedish language and culture. This constitutes an important perspective for research on Finnish and Swedish early childhood education units that are located in the same building…
